    Cricket at Eastham House

On Saturday last the House party played a match against a team of the Village, captained by Mr. E. Holliday, on the lovely cricket ground situated in the Park in front of the house. A pleasant game was enjoyed by all, but the House team proved too strong for the visitors with the result appended. The visitors won the toss, but elected to field first, and the Eastham House team played a good defensive game against the attack of the Village bowling, which proved to be very good. The batsmen, however, put on 126 for seven wickets, at which total the innings was declared closed. Mr. Rucker, Mr. H. D. Vernon, and Mr. W. N. Vernon contributed quite useful scores. Mr. H. D. Vernon hit one six.

The Village team then took up the defensive, but owing to the deadly bowling of Mr. Rucker, who took six wickets for seven runs, and Mr. Woodbridge, who took three wickets for seven runs, the score was a poor one. The Village then followed on, and achieved a rather better result, the second innings closing for 62. In this a new set of bowlers were requisitioned, and, assisted by excellent fielding, succeeded in disposing of the Villagers’ second attempt before the call of time. The Rev. H. R. C. Vernon bowled with good success, and other less tried bowlers came off well. Eastham House won by an innings and 49 runs.
